Why does my hair itch most of the time? These itches are so embarrassing. They usually occur when I am about to have some lunch with my colleagues at work or when I am having dinner with my better-half. I am getting really frustrated with my hair. Sometimes I feel like shaving off these hair, so that I can have some peace.
Perhaps you have said the above statement before and wondered what you should do next with the itchy scalp. You are not alone, for I have been there before too. My frustration led me into finding out some causes of itchy scalp and ways of combating them.
So here are 5 causes of itchy scalp and their solutions:
1} Dry scalp: when we wash our hair with shampoo, it usually washes off the natural sebaceous oil that our hair have, thereby stripping it of its natural vitamins and minerals. This leaves our hair and scalp very dry and once our scalp is dry, it automatically leads to itches.
Remedy: Avoid using shampoo to wash your hair, instead use a botanical conditioner to wash your hair. After you’ve washed your hair, moisturize your hair with some natural oil and a leave-in conditioner.
2} Sugary Foods: The eating of junk foods can actually be very detrimental to our health. Not to talk of the immense disadvantage they do to our natural hair. When we eat junk foods they alter the ph level of our body, because they are laden with sugar which is pure acid to our body.
These sugary foods also have no nutritional values for our bodies. They do not supply any vitamins that are required for hair growth to our natural hair. They also cause serious itches for our scalp.
Remedy: Eat fruits and vegetables. Try your best to snack on nuts. if possible cook your own meal, so that you can control the amount sugar and salt you put into your food preparation.
3} Low-Quality Hair: The quality of hair you buy is very important. Low quality hair can cause serious itches to your scalp. These days, there are different kinds of hair coming from different kinds of companies from different countries all around the world. Therefore, make sure that you are not buying a low-quality hair.
Low- quality hair extensions or less-than 100 % Kanekalon braiding hair can cause a lot of itches on one’s scalp. Cheap hair does not equal excellent hair, like the saying goes……” we get what we pay for.”
Remedy: Avoid using any braiding hair that is less than 100% Kanekalon. Invest your money in buying good quality human hair extensions. Though they may be very expensive but you will be saving a lot of money in the long run. You would prevent your scalp from getting those uncomfortable itches that come as a result of using low-quality hair.
4} Dirty Scalp: Itches of the scalp can also occur as a result of hair that has been laden with different types of hair products and left unwashed. These petroleum hair products or other types of hair products contain a lot of chemicals. If too much of them stay in your hair for a very long period of time, say about three to four months without being washed, they could lead to itchy scalp.
Remedy: Wash your natural hair at least once in a month or two months, but don’t exceed two months without a hair wash. The washing of hair allows our hair follicles to get some “fresh air.” It helps us to unclog the pores of our scalp. When our pores are clean, they absolve good hair products better and cause our hair to grow and glow.
5} Head Lice: Head lice are parasitic insects that live in human hair. They are highly contagious and they lay eggs in multiplications, making it very difficult for one to get rid of them.
This is the reason why we can’t afford to visit and stay in a dirty salon, or use combs and other hair accessories that were kept in dirty environments or not washed and sterilized by the hairstylist.
Remedy: Don’t visit a dirty salon.
Thank you so much.
